May's Attribute is RESPONSIBILITY.

WHAT IS RESPONSIBILITY?
I will be accountable for my actions, be reliable and keep my commitments.

I WILL:
•honour my commitments to others even though it may be difficult for me.
•be reliable so that people know they can depend on me to do what I say I will do.
•be accountable for the things I say and do and I will not make excuses if I fall short of the mark.

“Character — the willingness to accept responsibility for one's own life — is the source from which self-respect springs.” Joan Didion

School Boards in York Region

The Character Community initiative is prominent in the elementary and secondary schools of York Region District School Board  and  York Catholic District School Board.

As time goes by, schools are embracing Character education in ways and means that are relevant to them as they see and hear of the benefits that other schools are experiencing.

More and more, schools are reporting that staff, students, and parents are now naturally referring to the Character Attributes.

Teachers are relaying incidents about improved courtesy and attendance, and about activities demonstrating caring for others, both on and off school property.

Character education involves the preparation of learners to be responsible, caring and contributing citizens.

Good character is a cornerstone of a civil, just and democratic society; it can be both taught and learned.

It contributes to the development of safe, supportive schools, develops the emotional and social learning and enhances academic achievement.

It contributes to the individual’s personal well being.

In September 2003, the York Catholic District School Board designed its poster, "York Catholic Communities of Faith."

The design is anchored with a cross containing the important values of Catholic teachings such as the Ten Commandments, Catholic Graduate Expectations, the Board's mission statement, Beatitudes, The Great Commandment and Fruits of the Holy Spirit.

The cross is encircled by the Character Attributes and is surrounded by bold colours in a deliberate decision to attract the eyes of young people - the target audience.

Each of the Board's 88 schools displays a large version of this poster in a prominent location while a smaller version is posted in every classroom.

The Character Community theme is integrated into the classroom and students are encouraged to develop a strong sense of character both inside and outside of the classroom.
