Jeffrey Moore Motivating Futures
Jeffrey Moore, Motivating Futures was started with a question, “How do we teach the youth and young adults the most important lessons in life?” How do we teach them the strength of perseverance, the importance of honesty, respect and personal responsibility? The answer was clear. We teach by inspiring students to believe in themselves and their own potential.
For two years, I have been working my life's passion through inspiring the youth to believe that anything is possible. I have worked with young adults ages 12 and older through to mature adults, to teach the importance of setting and achieving goals. I strive daily to inspire others to live their dreams and to make the most of life.
My journey began two years ago after the completion of my first book “Twenty Something in the Twenty Somethings”. This book is an introspective look at what it is like to be twenty years old in the new millennium. I wrote the book as a personal declaration for the new found success I discovered after overcoming a drug and alcohol dependency. I wrote about what I believed was possible in life, and the courage and integrity it takes to truly get something. My book was released last February, online, at amazon.com, chapters.ca, borders.com and through Chapters Newmarket. Currently, “Twenty Something in the Twenty Somethings” is the number one independent book in Chapters Newmarket. It has recently been picked up by two other Toronto Chapters' locations.
I began doing lectures through Toastmasters and then moved into the school community to help promote my book. The response that I received was phenomenal. I believe the most rewarding moment came when I actually saw “a student's face light up with a sparkle in his eye” as I explained what a decision is and how it can transform a life. I knew that for that student it had been a “lightbulb moment” and that he really understood my message.
I believe I have the most rewarding job in the world and continue my journey with great passion and the expectation of helping people to set and achieve their goals.
My presentations have received tremendous support from principals, teachers, parents and students. The feedback encourages me to continue to pursue my passion since it is making a difference in the lives of many students and their families. Each success story is one more victory toward student achievement and lifelong learning.
The presentations are powerful and provide smart and useful knowledge that can only lead to growth and success. My success to date includes a personal mission to give back in life. In an effort to recognize the value of education and the dedication and commitment of teachers and educators I was inspired to give back to my own local school community. I have created the annual Jeffrey Moore Motivating Futures School fundraiser. The event for 2007 will be hosted at my very own public school, Fred C. Cook Public, Fletcher Street , Bradford . This venue will include a motivational session for the community at large. The proceeds will be donated to the school to support literacy and achievement.
Overview of Presentations
It is my goal to support student success and achievement. I have tailored my presentations for each school board to reflect and support curriculum and attributes of character development.
Character Development- Commitment To Achieving High School Diploma
This presentation was prepared for elementary students in grade 7 and 8.
It has a direct focus on the absolute importance of setting goals at a young age. The main theme is that the most important goal which they can have for the next 4 to 5 years is to get their high school diploma.
The presentation is approximately an hour and a half in duration. It is engaging and energetic and includes self-esteem tools, the creation of a goal board and motivational quotes. There is an element of humour, fun and seriousness as I provide a variety of amazing success stories of well known leaders and my own personal grade nine stories.
We examine the new peer pressure that they will encounter in High School, especially when it comes to S.A.D. which stands for sex, alcohol and drugs, and how these substances or events can really change their lives forever. I present my personal story of how I lost a close friend due to drinking and driving.
The presentation concludes with a game where every student receives a motivational quote. Using the 11 key characteristics board they explain what the quote means and which characteristics it embodies.
An example of this would be the quote “IF IT IS TO BE IT IS UP TO ME.”
This quote helps to understand that in life if I truly wish to accomplish a goal or create something for myself, that nobody will hold my hand and that it is my responsibility.
The characteristics that it embodies are:
- perseverance as I know I will face set backs and disappointments,
- courage to overcome these set backs and disappointments,
- initiative to really get the momentum started,
- optimism to remind my self of what's possible ,
- respect , for not only others but my self as well I must respect and
- believe in my self to get the job done and,
- responsibility to finish what ever I start.
At the end of the presentation there is a question and answer period. I have observed this to be a time of growth for the students. Many students discuss their own concerns about the future. It is a time for reaffirming the opportunity and possibilities that lie ahead for them if they choose to believe in their own success and start now to set and realize goals.
Cost: $250.00 per regular presentation
$350.00 for presentation including actual goal board development
Four Key Fundamentals for Achieving Success
This presentation was developed to meet the needs of grade 12 high school students and students attending learning centres. It focuses on the four key fundamentals toward creating and achieving anything you want in life. The fundamentals are taken directly from my book “Twenty Something In the Twenty Somethings”, published 2006. My book is my personal story of changing my life from a life of wasted time and destruction to achievement and success. I am honest and straightforward and share personal situations that held me back. I discuss my past drug and alcohol consumption and the day of enlightenment that turned my life around. While sitting on my floor eating fries out of a taco bell bag that were three days old because I had spent all my money on drugs, I suddenly realized what a failure I had become. I was tired of being in last place in life when I knew that I had first place potential.
The theme of the presentation is about recognizing self worth and potential and going for the goal of success and achievement. It discusses my “life compounded interest theory”. This is the theory of how making a small shift in the way you live today may not seem like much; however, over time it can lead to a brand new revolution of you. As an example I highlight my point by illustrating that if you go one day with out brushing your teeth you might get away with it. At most maybe you will have bad breath or some food stuck in-between some teeth. However, if you compound that over three years the effects will definitely show.
Using the four key fundamentals we create a blue print for their future lives. The students select one goal that if accomplished would change their life forever. They write the goal at the bottom of their blue print page. After selecting a goal I help them to understand that the only thing that keeps them from achieving this goal is their belief that it is impossible. We then examine how we tend to never actually choose our own beliefs but rather live by others .
The four fundamentals:
First fundamental: Becoming Your Own Leader . I explain to them that they are the only ones responsible for their life and create an understanding that they didn't just magically wake up one morning and become who they are. Rather, that they have led themselves to this exact point. The students then write on the very top of their blue print “I am responsible for my life.”
Second fundamental: Eliminate Excuses And Create Results. We discuss how excuses are nothing more than self lies to justify to ourselves never doing the things we should, toward achieving our goals. The students then write down four or five excuses they usually use. Underneath, they write down, “I will not allow these or any other excuses to stand in my way.”
Third fundamental: Dedication Through Action . I explain that essentially there are two types of people: those who live through creating excuse; and those who create results. I explain that the only real difference is that people who create results take continued action toward their goals. Students then write down four or five action steps they can take today toward achieving and realizing their goal.
Fourth fundamental: Believing In Yourself Through Failure. This focuses on helping students to understand the misconception about the way we view failure in our society. Failure is nothing more than a progression of success. In fact, it is the “yang” to success “ying”, in that one cannot exist without the other. I use the story of Thomas Edison and his ten thousand plus attempts to create the electric light bulb. Students then write down above the goal that they originally wrote, “ I shall never allow failure to be anything more then a lesson I need to achieve anything I want. For true failure is nothing more than a lesson being taught to me so I can get closer to whatever it is I want. There are no mistakes just lessons learned.”
The final exercise includes students writing on paper that they are responsible for their lives. It includes the excuses they have told themselves that currently stands in their way and a commitment exercise to overcoming and reaching success. The concluding portion has the student listing five actions steps they can take to eliminate excuses and get them closer to their goal. The last statement is that “failure is only a lesson being taught to achieve a goal.” By seeing the goal in reachable and attainable measure they have created a path to their goal.
In the wrap up I explain to them that they have now put themselves in the top ninety-seven percent of achievers, and that all they have to do to enter the top one percent is now take action. We then conclude with the quote game that was discussed in the first presentation- Character Development- Commitment To Achieving A High School Diploma.
This workshop is approximately one and one half hours in duration. It is thought provoking, fun and focused. For many, this exercise is the first time in life that they have written their goals on paper and thought out an action plan to turn them into action and achievement. Students have responded with excitement and enthusiasm to the momentum of creating a path toward goals and future attainment.
