Timeline of Events

June 2001

Steering Committee formed to develop a proposal for a Character Community initiative in York Region.

Jan. 2002

York Regional Council passes a resolution declaring York Region a Character Community; the Steering Committee becomes the Character Community Council.

Summer 2002

All nine area municipalities of York Region pass resolutions.

Nov. 2002

York Regional Council adopts 11 attributes that create good character. Former Toronto Maple Leafs hockey captain and York Region resident Wendel Clark named York Region's Character Champion. Character Community Foundation of York now incorporated.

June 2006

Ontario becomes a Province of Character through an independent member's resolution, brought forward by Markham MPP Tony Wong.

April 2007

The Character Community Initiative is granted charitable status as the 1st registered Character Community charity in Canada. The mandate fo the Character Community Foundation is to raise awareness and educate the public, private and nonprofit sector on character development.
